Mandira Bedi on The Greedy Closet

Mandira Bedi is a marvel. Every step of the way she has been a trendsetter and hit all of the stereotypes right out of the park. She started out with one of the first shows focused on women, ventured into cricket, started her own clothing line following her passion and has a fan club of millions. The emissary of everlasting youth confessed on The Greedy Closet that 40s is the best phase of her life. “I say this with all the gratitude, my 20s went by finding myself. I come from no background in the entertainment industry. This is the best phase of my life, the best work is coming my way, the most amount of self-love I feel, the most amount of confidence I have, the fittest I have ever been is in my 40s,” she admitted.

Mandira set a benchmark early on since she was a part of India’s first ever daily soap. Speaking about how she bagged the project, Mandira revealed, “As a part of my post-graduation course, I had to work in a stream of my choice. I decided to join Prahlad Kakkar, the pioneer of ad-film making in India. The director of Shanti was getting his ad made and asked me if I’d be interested. He gave me some really cheesy and horrible lines to audition. I was like I am pretty sure I am not doing this show. Later, he asked me what are your plans for the next one year because the makers are quite keen on having you. I came from Cathedral so my Hindi was not that great. I learned all of my Hindi at work. So, that’s how Shanti happened, the first ever daily soap on Indian television.”

Mandira also disclosed about how her clothing line came into being. She said, “You see me in fully extremes. I am all decked up in a saree or a gown or its athleisure. On one of the Diwalis, I just made for a saree for myself and wore it. People went like, ‘who are you wearing?’ I was like, ‘I am wearing me.’ That kind of pushed me to do something of my own. I have a small saree label.”

During the rapid fire segment, host Monica Dogra asked Namrata Joshipura to name a celebrity who needs a stylist immediately. “Rakhi Sawant,” replied Namrata to which Mandira gave a tongue-in-cheek comment, “She said celebrity!” At the end of the episode, Namrata gave Mandira a fashion makeover!
