The Verdict Trailer

The Verdict revisits one of India’s high-profile court case, Commander K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra. The ZEE5 Original and ALTBalaji Original adopts a fictional route to trace the events of the sensational 1959 case that shook India. Akshay Kumar’s 2016 blockbuster film Rustom was also based on the very case and so was 1973 flick Achanak. Not only was it amongst independent India’s highly publicized judicial cases but also involved notable Indian legal fraternity figure and former Union Minister Ram Jethmalani who breathed his last on Sunday, 8 September 2019. Jethmalani had led the prosecution against Naval Commander Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati who murdered Prem Ahuja owing to the latter’s sexual relations with his wife Synthia.

Manav Kaul essays Nanavati while Sumeet Vyas has been roped in to play Jethmalani in The Verdict. Soorma star Angad Bedi features as real-life character Karl Jamshedji Khandalavala, the defense lawyer on the case. Elli AvrRam joins The Verdict to play Nanavati’s wife.

The digital drama also stars Pooja Gor, Kubbra Sait, Makarand Deshpande, Sourabh Shukla, Swanand Kirkire and Soni Razdan in important roles. The trailer of the series opens to a scenario in India that has just begun to enjoy the freedom from the British Raj. Quickly moving to 1959, the video takes us to a courtroom where Nanavati is on a trial for killing Prem. Sharing a detailed description about his character, Manav had written on Instagram, “Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati, one of India’s brightest Naval Commanders, the blue-eyed boy of the powers to be, and the pride of the Parsi community, who was about to be the next Naval Chief! In 1949, he returned from England with a passion for western music and his English bride, Sylvia Nanavati. They settled in Mumbai and had a family with 3 children of theirs. In 1959, he returned home from the high seas to discover his wife’s betrayal. What he did after that, set a maelstrom rolling, in which the most powerful political figures, the topmost media, naval top-brass, and the brightest legal brains got involved. Then began a war of opinions, morals, and communities triggering off a case that divided India!”

A riveting legal thriller, The Verdict is packed with several arguments and counter-arguments made inside a courtroom. More importantly, the web series sheds light on the ‘War of the Sexes’ – Nanavati was seen as Ram and Prem as Ravan goes a line in the video clip. On the other hand, a ‘War of Moralities’ is being fought at the same time, we see Sumeet’s character say they need more Sindhi members on the jury, hinting at a community angle too.
